The initial inspiration came from shadows cast on grass. A few months later she came up with a technique that didn't make the subject on the canvas as an unflat image. Rather the subject is transformed into a representation of the subject in which the painting becomes the carrier of it's own painterly interpretation, especially when the subjects are living or perishable items like people or fruits. Alexa Meade's style of painting, that is extremely ephemeral the sense that it is amorphous, transparent. The only work of her art to survive is her photograph. The painting and the photographic techniques are so closely coordinated that the result is an unflat, 2-dimensional space that achieves trompe-l'oeil. In this, the third dimension is only visible in specific areas, such as near the eyes, or near hair. Meade frequently blends her painted characters within the three-dimensional space around the figures. They interact within the world she has created for herself. This eliminates the distinctions between photography, painting, and installation.
